Providing Healthy Entertainment For Your Children During the Long Summer

Summer has been here for over two months now. Although children will soon be back in school, they still have almost another month of summer vacation left. At this point, they have probably run out of activities to do. You, as a parent, have probably run out of ideas to entertain them with. You may have already gone on a family vacation, and no longer have vacation time or the funds available for another family vacation. A great alternative and fun activity for children to participate in is a day camp. A day camp allows children to attend an organized day event with other children. The camp may focus on specific skills or activities, depending on the preferences and hobbies of your children.

A day camp is a great option for children who may be bored during the day, but do not want to leave home for an extended period of time. They may simply need something to entertain them, while the parents are at work. Many children resort to TV or video game time, which does not provide any academic or fitness benefits to the child. A child who spends their day at a kids camp is more active and socially engaged than other children.

Children now spend more than 7 and a half hours a day in front of a screen (e.g. TV, videogames, computer). This time may increase during the summer days, when they do not have school or homeowner to occupy them. Additionally, many sporting and group events during school also take breaks during the summer months. Children who have interests during the school year can use the day camp to increase these skills and sporting hobbies. A child who attends basketball camp, for example, will find that their basketball skills will increase. They are more likely to make the basketball team in school and to do well at it. They will also create lasting friendships with people who enjoy similar activities and sports that they may attend school with together.

Only about 1 in 5 homes have parks within a half mile, and about the same number have a fitness or recreation center within that distance. A child who does not have close access to a park or fitness center is likely to be less active. A beach camp or summer camp will provide the child with the necessary outdoor time and will engage them in fun activities to entertain them. Also, children who spend their days at a summer camp are likely to come home more satisfied than if they were to spend their entire day in the home.

Children who spend their time in front of the TV or computer all day will also eat less healthy. Parents who are away at work may not have the ability to monitor their child?s eating habits. A Malibu summer camp provides the children with the necessary meals, providing them with healthy eating options. Most children consumer too many empty calories, and then do not do enough active activities to make up for it. Empty calories from added sugars and solid fats contribute to 40% of total daily calories for 2 to 18 year olds and half of these empty calories come from 6 sources, soda, fruit drinks, dairy desserts, grain desserts, pizza and whole milk.

By this point in the summer, children are bored and parents have fun out of opportunities or options to entertain them with. A day camp is a great option because it provides children with something to do all day that is both entertaining and safe. The day camp encourages physical activity and can foster individual sporting and group likes. Children can work on their socialization and sporting skills that will help them out in the coming school year. They will also be encouraged to be more physically active and to eat better.
